For the second season in a row, Athlone knocked Longford Town out of the EA Sports Cup Preliminary Round. In a hard fought match a second half Stephen Place header was enough to see Athlone through to the First Round where a trip to UCD awaits. This was the also the second season in a row where Place had scored in this fixture.
Padraig Moran, the Assistant Manager took control of the team for the match as part of his UEFA Coaching course and he was understanably delighted at the end of the match.
A largely youthful team took the field for Athlone although first team regulars Des Hope, Stephen Caffrey and Kevin Williamson added a bit of experience to the side. The match also let Town fans catch there first glimpse of keeper Michael Schlingerman, who, while largely untroubled throughout the match looked comfortable and is sure to press Chris Bennion for the first team spot in the coming weeks and months. Four more players made there senior competitive debut for Athlone Town , Kevin Quinn, Gordon Watson, Garvan Broughall, Shane O’Connell all of whom gave a good account of themselves. Particular interest to the Town fans was the appearance of local Lad Broughall who came on as a second half sub.
A largely dissapointing match with few chances, although it was great to see the younger Athlone players compete against a strong Longford side.
Dissapointing news for Town fans was the substitutions of both Hope and Scullion for what looked like injuries, hopefully this was done more as a precaution than a neccessity.
iSTAT Man of The Match: Niall Scullion, he set up the only goal of the game with a great cross in from the right and looked both dangerous in attack and solid in defence.

Athlone Town put in a spirited performance against League of Ireland Champions Bohemian. An Eoghan Oshea own goal late in the second half won the game for Bohs who were admittedly the better side. However Athlone defended well and limited bohs chances although it took last ditch tackles on a couple of occasions and some fine goalkeeping by Slingerman (hope thats correct) to keep them out. Athlone’s starting team included Des Hope, Austin Skelly, Alan Keely, Staphen Caffrey, Richie O’hanlon. Second half subsititutes of which there was many included Niall Scullion, James O’Connell(?), Robbie Farrell and Eoghan O’Shea. Young Kevin Dunne replaced KElly just after half time and looked comfortable beside hope in the heart of the Athlone Defence. Continue reading »
